Your data has a story to tell

Author: Nate Latessa, President

Last week the Heureka team added a new chapter to data visualization and demonstrated that even a small amount of additional data can have a major impact on how information is interpreted. Our recent use case involved a client who wanted to visualize data using the same departments found in Active Directory rather than by individual endpoints using Interrogate. Our client provided an AD export list containing a “like” category which was then merged with Interrogate search results inside Heureka’s Tableau workbook.

Once merged, a new dashboard was created to include company departments from the AD list. All of the standard stats remain in place including total number of endpoints, file counts, total volume, duplicative percentage and files containing risk. To help visualize we chose a heatmap because it best displayed our client’s desire to quickly see which department carried the largest file volume and potential risk. Full interactivity allow our client to quickly select their department(s) either from a pick-list or by simply selecting from the heatmap and then drill down to specific file-level information.

Risk by department was the secondary concern in this case and the added AD information provided strong visual proof of which department contained the highest amount of risk. In this situation, the highest risk was outside the Human Resource department which brought extra attention to the location and method by which users were storing information. Interrogate’s built-in remediation tools were invaluable as file quarantining could be performed from one location on endpoints that were not geographically in the same place.

By merging AD and Interrogate information we demonstrated the ability to dramatically expand visualization possibilities to solve clients needs. Next week I will explore endpoint geo-locations in conjunction with risk and file movement.
